A-Levels in Kiuma

Premiere in KIUMA: secondary school pupils celebrate their A-Levels

The pupils of the first secondary school class (form VI) of the KIUMA Secondary School Bonita celebrated passing their A-Levels at the end of January. In Tanzania, these celebrations take place before the actual exam (February), as the pupils go home for several weeks after the exams to wait for the result. The distances, most of them have to travel are too great for the pupils to return for a ceremony and celebrations.

Overall, 27 pupils were honoured for passing their A-Levels; 17 of them came from the Tunduru District – unfortunately only four girls were among the graduates. Some of the pupils had been attending the KIUMA Secondary School for the entire period of six years; others had joined them from other schools.

Fred Heimbach, who intensively supports the development in KIUMA from Germany and who attended the graduation ceremony reported later: “It was very impressive to see the enthusiasm of the pupils. I thought a lot about my own graduation ceremony. The joy felt by the Head of KIUMA Matomora, the headteacher and the teachers was also everyone to see. The representative of the District government summed it up with the statement: “Now the young people in the Tunduru District have at last the chance to do their A-Levels.  There is such a school in the district, but this is almost only attended by pupils from outside the district.”
