Limekiln children
School instead of work for limekiln children
In order to have any chance to survive, many Indian children have to contribute helping their often poor families to survive (Information on child labour). The families are dependent on the income of the children. As a result, hundreds of children work for example work in limekilns under inhuman conditions: they use simple hammers to break up limestone, which they carry to the ovens in baskets. Here, occupational safety and health are foreign words.
Over the past years, wortundtat has made sure that many children living near Piduguralla have the chance of going to a day nursery or to school, which means that they don’t need to work to support their families.
Until the school in Piduguralla is operable, some children attend classes in Chilakaluripet. About 600 go to an infant school with day nursery in preparation to attend a secondary school. The plan is now to build a day nursery and a school in Piduguralla, in direct vicinity to the limekilns – right in the middle of a settlement for working families. The government has made land available for the settlement, where about 1,150 families will be able to move into a solid house. wortundtat took over the families’ share for 750 houses.
