Breaking stones for 3 Euros a month
Harrowing everyday life in the stone quarries of Yeleswaram in the South Indian Federal State of Andhra Pradesh. Back-breaking work already for the youngest. Every single year. Six days a week. Ten hours a day. For just three Euros. Not per day. Per month. Children without childhood. Since Sathi was five he has every morning accompanied his parents, his brother and his two sisters to the stone quarry, which is only a few steps away from their tiny home made from clay.

Attending school for 18 Euros per month
That this corner of India is remote, but not forgotten by the world has been demonstrated for a few years by the lively hustle and bustle in the newly built „wortundtat“ school for stone quarry children. Children in dark red and white school uniforms push their knees under small desks. Spelling in chorus. The bowl of rice with vegetable sauce is delicious at lunchtime. After the meal a round of rope skipping: for many the first game of their young life. Among them Sathi.

The aim is to expand the help for the over 1,700 child workers of Yeleswaram. Because many children are still faced with the awful reality of working in the stone quarry. The „wortundtat“ school in Yeleswaram gives hope to those without hope. Perhaps Sathi will be the first in his family to escape the vicious circle of poverty and exploitation. Because thanks to his school education he will be capable of more than just breaking up stones.
