KIUMA Hospital: 70 beds for 100,000 people
The KIUMA Hospital has 70 beds. It is the only hospital in a radius of 70 km. Overall 100,000 people are living in this catchment area. The hospital comprises separate wards for women, men and children as well as an isolation ward. The most important ward, however, is the maternity ward. In contrast to Europe, where most children are born in a hospital, in Kiuma women only go to hospital in an emergency. About half of the deliveries at the KIUMA Hospital are therefore problematic and many children are born by Caesarean. Without the clinic, however, most deliveries would be fatal both for mother and child.
Apart from the direct supply of the residents, KIUMA works closely with the public medical stations in the surrounding villages.
