The labour market is developing slowly

About 80 percent of Tanzania's labour force is working in agriculture - mainly to cover their own needs. At an average annual income of about 1,100 Euro, the country ranks in 202nd place of the Human Development Index (of 227 states, Germany: rank 37). Almost 90 percent of the population is living in poverty; about a third below the subsistence minimum. The inflation rate in 2009 stood at 12 percent.

The overall situation is even worse in the south of the country. Exact figures are not available. With regard to its catchment area, the KIUMA Project wants to make a long-term contribution to changing and improving the situation: by educating and training people from the region and giving them incentives to stay, enhances the chances of an overall improvement of the standard of living.
