Electricity brings progress to medical care

11 > Currently, the KIUMAHospitalinTanzaniahas only electricity for eleven hours daily.Such a restriction would be unthinkable in Central Europe.However, for the rural TunduruDistrictthis had been a luxury for a long time.Based on solar energy anda connection to the local network operator, wortundtatnow wants to supply its hospital and all other buildings at the site with round-the-clock electricity-making it fit for the future.

A beneficial facility

Until recently, electricity has been in short supply in the rural TunduruDistrict.Only a few villages have generators to produce energy.Andfuel is expensive.Hence, machinery is only rarely used and only a few residents benefit.The fact that over the coming months the national energy supplier will start to install the electric cables and to connect the region to the grid will trigger an enormous development boost.

Subsequently, the KIUMA Hospital will be able to provide the about 100,000people from the regionwith even more reliable care.This is not least necessary because until further notice the hospital will be the only accessible, noteworthy medical facility within a 70-kilometre radius.In order to be well prepared, the hospital is currently undergoing a gradual modernisation.Over the past months, all wards have been renovated, some of them werealtered and all of them were furnished with new beds.There is also progress with regard to staff.In spite of a lack of specialists in rural areas, it has been possible to recruit a second anaesthetist, who, together with his colleague assists the two specialists.Apart from plans to build an extension, there is also the intention to train care personnel.

Better care with 24/7 electricity

So far, the hospital could only generate a maximum of eleven hours electricity daily.Soon it will have a permanent supply of energy.This will mean a considerable improvement in patient care as sufficient light foroperations,refrigerating facilities for sensiblemedication orheating energyforincubators will be available.However, the public network will probably not always work reliably. Therefore,wortundtatwill ensure the energy supply by providing a photovoltaic system,moderngeneratorsanda large batteryasintermediate energy storage in addition.In order to be able to cope with future demands,older electrical cables on the site will also be renewed-overall a great expense, which, however, makes a lot of sense.If everything goes according to plan,the hospital will have its desired round-the-clock energy supply by the end of 2017.
