International Day of Older Persons: Seeing the hardship of the elderly and helping them

Just as children are a weak but vital link of society, the older generation too belongs to every healthy society, which it enriches. And just like children, the elderly sometimes need our attention and support. wortundtat sees this hardship – not only on 1st October, the International Tag Day of Older Persons, but on every other day of the year – and reacts.

At Gloria inMoldovan Ceadîr Lunga, in particular elderly poor people receive medical aid, which is so important for them.

Help for impoverished pensioners in Moldova

In Moldovan Ceadîr Lunga for example, the elderly get such a small pension that many have to decide during the extremely cold winters, whether they will heat or eat. In most cases, they have not enough money for both. Not least because the price for gas has constantly risen in recent years. Food has also become increasingly more expensive. And other things, most of us take for granted, they just cannot afford. Therefore, Project Gloria, which is supported by wortundtat, is helping above all elderly people living in the city – among other by providing them with

  • free meals,
  • good quality second hand clothing,
  • the opportunity of seeing a doctor,
  • an outpatient care service,
  • firewood or wooden pallets for heating and
  • builders, who make individual houses in danger of collapsing inhabitable again.

AMG provides elderly women with a meal. For many, this is the only meal they are getting every day.

Help for ousted women in India

In India, especially widows fall victim to a practically non-existing old age security system: in many traditional regions, if a woman outlives her husband, she is still today excluded from her family and her social environment. Nobody takes care of her. Nobody comes to her assistance.

Our partner AMG has a number of homes to provide at least some women with accommodation, where they can spend their remaining years in a protected environment. Other older people, who do not even have the bare essentials to survive, are given food, clothing and other aids by our partner on a regular basis.

Help for impoverished older people in Greece

The number of elderly people in Greece, whose meagre pension is not enough to make ends meet, has not only been rising since the financial crisis. In one of the Social-Diaconal Centres of our Greek partner, people in need receive a free meal on some days of the week. This offer is taken up by more and more senior citizens. They also appreciate the opportunity to meet people, who do not judge them because of their status or appearance, but who accept them the way they are.
